VL# 10455 External Staff Research Associate III (STAFF RESEARCH ASSOC III) $3,485.00 - $5,604.00/Mo. Final Filing Date 06-19-08 This position is located in: Department of Plant Sciences and is represented by a union. Working hours: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-5:00pm. This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public. Applications from the general public and UCD/UCDHS employees will be considered simultaneously. Responsibilities: This position supports the UC Small Grain program by implementing and coordinating elite and regional testing trials, disease nurseries and the Collaborative Wheat Quality program, and providing primary assistance to the wheat breeder for the organization of the Small Grain Workgroup. Conducts on- and off-station small grain germplasm evaluations and research on various aspects of cereal crop management and collaborates with the wheat and barley breeding programs. The position may develop a small malting barley breeding program. Assists in educational and extension activities on small grains. Acts as lead coordinator of the following positions: Laboratory Assistant III; Staff Research Associate I; Sr. Agric. Technician. Requirements: Theoretical background and professional level of knowledge as exemplified by a M.S. in Plant Sciences (Agronomy, Breeding, Phytopathology, or Genetics) or demonstrated experience in field trial work in small grains. Comprehensive knowledge of the agronomy and pest management of small grain crops (wheat and barley). Advanced knowledge of cereal diseases, cultural practices required for successful production of small grain crops, cereal variety characteristics and production techniques, experimental plot design, data collection methods, factors (diseases, weeds, etc.) affecting crop performance to assess the impact, and statistical analysis methods. Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with cooperators, co-workers, student assistants and labor-pool workers. Ability to lead and coordinate the activities of the team responsible for the regional testing program. Skill to assess student assistants and casual workers (labor-pool) to carry out field work tasks (seed preparation, sowing, plot measurement, grain harvest, post-harvest processing, data entry, etc.). Ability to use the personal computer for data management and analysis. Familiarity with appropriate data analysis programs (i.e. SAS, MSTAT, etc.) and skill to adapt them to the specific needs of the small grain germplasm evaluation program and cereal crop management experiments. Special Conditions of Employment: Ability to carry-out work assignment on- and off-station independent of direct supervision. Approximately 50% of time is off-station during planting and harvesting, requiring extended trips and frequent overtime. Class I California Driver's License and a CDFA Qualified Applicator Certificate acquired within 6 months of date of hire.
