The Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK, http://www.ipk-gatersleben.de) is an internationally leading center for basic and applied research in the following areas: Genetic Diversity of Crop Plants, Dynamics of Plant Genomes, and Integrative Biology of Plant Performance with special emphasis on the model / crop plant species barley (Hordeum vulgare). The institute currently hosts over 450 employees and provides state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and bioinformatics resources for high-throughput molecular biology and plant genome analysis.
will become available in the research group Genome Diversity, for a period of 2.5 years, starting from September 1st, 2008. The aim of the project is to augment the genetic resources in the Triticeae species rye (Secale cereale). The holder of the position will be engaged in the assembly of EST datasets of several rye inbred lines generated by 454-sequencing, and in in silicio SNP detection. High confidence SNPs from defined uni-genes will enter in the design of a high throughput genotyping platform which will be employed in the development of a dense genetic map of rye. This resource will be instrumental for refined comparative genomic analysis to other cereal genomes, e.g. barley, wheat and rice. The project is part of a larger research cluster of three genomics projects on rye funded in the frame of the german plant genome programme GABI-Future ( www.gabi.de). The candidate will join a group with a long track record in Triticeae structural and functional genomics. The candidate must hold a PhD in Biology, Agrobiological Sciences or Bioinformatics (with a strong biological background. He/she should be familiar with DNA sequence-analysis, molecular marker technologies and genetic mapping. Furthermore, the candidate should become acquainted with bioinformatics tools tailored to process high-throughput data sets. Skills in Perl or equivalent scripting languages will be appreciated. For details, please contact Dr. Nils Stein ( stein@ipk-gatersleben.de). Please send your application including curriculum vitae, a statement on research experience and two references until August 10th, 2008 to:
