FACULTY POSITIONS IN CROP BREEDING AND GENETICS

Washington State University -- Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, Pullman, WA. Open rank, in Crop Breeding and Genetics (2 positions -- open rank at assistant professor, associate professor or full professor level, winter wheat, spring wheat). 12-month, tenure-track/tenured. The main emphases of the positions are plant breeding for winter or spring wheat variety development and release in Washington. Research responsibilities include developing robust, integrated field and molecular-based breeding programs that employ novel breeding approaches for winter or spring wheat improvement, including introgression of proprietary and possibly transgenic traits to meet breeding goals. The successful candidates are expected to release wheat varieties with desirable end-use quality and agronomic performance, obtain extramural funding, train graduate students, and publish research results. Academic responsibilities include, but are not limited to, designing and teaching a course in plant breeding, genetics, or a closely related area to support overall teaching goals of the department.

Required qualifications:
PhD in plant breeding, genetics or a closely related field at the time of hiring;
demonstrated knowledge and abilities in applied, field-based plant breeding and molecular genetics;
excellent written and oral communication skills;
demonstrated record of scholarship commensurate with rank.

Desired qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to develop and release crop varieties or germplasm of superior quality and agronomic performance;
demonstrated ability to collaborate with industry and the crop research community on a local, regional, national or international basis;
willingness to include proprietary traits and new genetic technologies in varieties, to meet breeding goals;
demonstrated success in grant acquisition, staff supervision, and collaborative research; demonstrated ability to effectively teach university courses;
demonstrated expertise in a related subject area such as germplasm development, plant physiology, quantitative genetics, trait introgression or biochemistry;
a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity (racial, ethnic, gender, age, disabilities) in the work place.
